View of the two crofts at Cuil Phail, north of the village of Iona; in the middle distance is the northern end of the Ross of Mull with Ben Buie beyond. Emerging from behind the crofts is the Dunara Castle cargo vessel.

Cadell first visited the Inner Hebridean island of Iona in 1912, and from 1913 onwards it was his regular destination for the summer painting season, and a second home.
This view of the Cuil Phail crofts is one of many, which is unsurprising since this is where Cadell stayed during most of his visits to Iona: " When he was there the tenant moved out and lived in the lean-to shed...This way of letting houses to visitors was not uncommon and provided supplementary income" Philip MacLeod Coupe.
