James Paterson R.S.A., P.R.S.W., R.W.S., N.E.A.C. (1854-1932)

Winter, Moniaive

Watercolour
Signed, inscribed and dated 'Moniaive 1885'
13 1/2 x 20 1/2 ins (34 x 52 cms)
1885

Paterson was a skilled draughtsman and this is highly apparent in the deceptively technical structure of 'Winter, Moniaive'.

Paterson had his studio on the banks of the river outside the village and used it as a device to draw our eye into and through his paintings of the surrounding area. Characterised by a relative coolness of palette as well as the decorative compositional structure 'Winter, Moniaive' is a classi example of his oeuvre.

This watercolour relates to a large oil dated 1885 entitled 'The Last Turning, Winter, Moniaive' from the Weymss Honeyman Collection.
