Roland Batchelor R.W.S. (1889-1990)

Anjou - The Quiet Life

Roland Batchelor was born in Chelsea, London in 1889. He studied at Putney under the Punch artist, George Morrow, then later at Regent Street Polytechnic, Central School of Arts and Crafts and the City and Guilds Art School.

In 1905 he began work as a civil servant in Customs and Excise, but he continued to paint and draw throughout his life, frequently travelling to France, which was the inspiration for much of his work. He depicted people in everyday life, recording scenes and incidents in an anecdotal manner.

His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Painter in Watercolours and the Royal Society of Watercolour Painters. He was made a member of R.W.S. in 1966.
